Our 'New' Honda RC30. A classic superbike

The next time you walk into Hunts showroom you might just notice the rather large glass case housing an 80’s superbike. The bike in question is a brand new 1989 Honda VFR750R RC30 which is Managing Director John Brown’s pride and joy. The bike has never been run (apparently its never even had fuel in it!) and is absolutely as delivered from the factory.

Launched in 1987 and built to conform to the rules of the then new World Superbike Championship, it was truly exotic, (a direct descendent of the RVF750 race bike) and, being built in limited numbers with the most advanced technology of the time, was very expensive.

Many RC30’s never reached the street, being instantly snapped up by racers throughout the world; and indeed it was on the racetracks that the RC30 achieved it’s legendary status. A young Carl Fogarty took his RC30 to consecutive Formula 1 World titles in 1988 and 1989, whilst in the USA Fred Merkel won the prestigious Superbike Championship in the same years.

Why an RC30? – John has always had a particular passion for the model (and indeed has sold several over the years) so when the opportunity to buy this one came about he didn’t hesitate: “the RC30 is a special bike and I thought it would make the perfect centrepiece for our new showroom. I’m delighted that so many people will get to see one of Honda’s classic superbikes close up” But will it ever be run? – “I doubt it really, but you never know” says John who also admits that he could be seriously tempted to have another one for the road “just for old times sake!”.
